Why Hubbub?
Privacy
New companies may start out with a "don't be evil" mantra, but inevitably economic pressure compels them to abandon those principles later, once enough people trust and rely on their sites. Hubbub is a software that can run on any webserver (just like a Blog) and it allows you to control who gets what information about you.
Ownership of Your Data
Traditional social networks don't ever allow you to export your data and take it somewhere else. What you enter there, stays there. One company owns all your data, be it photos, status messages, comments, bookmarks, contacts, anything. Hubbub lets you export ALL your data at any time and it can run on your private webserver as well so you can be sure your stuff isn't falling into the wrong hands.
Extensibility
We would never accept a single world-wide provider for our email, our web browsing, our instant messaging, our video content. Yet, social networking was up until now a single provider experience. Hubbub is an open, federated protocol - just like email. That means it's easy to use and to extend its functionality.
Robustness
Since Hubbub doesn't have a single point of failure, it is also more robust than any approach where all users are relying on one site only. When a Hubbub site goes down, one user goes offline for a while. When Twitter goes down, everybody is screwed.
