What Hubbub is
Before: Social Networking 1.0
You're probably familiar with the usual setup: first you open an account on a social networking site. This account works only on that site and its sole purpose is to make contact with other members of that single site. The site itself holds all your data, and the company behind the site controls not only your data but also the interactions you have on the site. Your entire social structure is owned by the site's operators and you can't take your information with you when you leave. Your privacy is subject to the site's policies and to the company's intentions.Enter Hubbub
Hubbub is an open protocol for social networking. By sending each other signed messages, Hubbub nodes all over the internet communicate with each other on behalf of their users. As a user, this means for you that you can export your data at any time and host it somewhere else. Nobody can delete or censor your content. And it also means that only your "friends" receive your updates, and not advertising or data mining companies.
